Description

Son of Dracula 1943. Directed by Robert Siodmak – his first film for Universal Studios – with a screenplay based on an original story by his brother Curt Siodmak . Count Alucard (hah!) as played by Lon Chaney Jr., makes his way from Budapest to the swamps of the Deep South to strike a deal with Katherine Caldwell (Louise Allbritton).

I really enjoy this movie -except for Lon Chaney Jr. That said, I just never thought he played Dracula (or a distant relative, possibly) of the venerable Count from Transylvania. I've always wondered how it would have played with Lugosi as the lead? Still, it's got some great moments in the script. Particularly Adeline De Walt Reynolds as Madame Queen Zimba. I love Katherine's double cross and of course the almost film noir ending.

I think the most terrifying part of the movie is not the transformation of first Dracula and then his consort Kay Caldwell into bats but the sequence in which the former's casket slowly emerges from the depths of the Louisiana bayou and a white mist oozes from inside it and reforms into the Count's physical body(wonder what happens to his vital organs in such a state?) and the casket drifts towards his smiling paramour Kay!
