X-men 57 recreation by ShawnVanBriesen
X-men 57 recreation
My take on Werner Roth's Uncanny X-men #57 splash page.

This is brush and ink on 11 x 17 Bristol board.  Inked with a #2 Raphael 8404 Martre Kolinksy brush.

Curse of the Demon Commission by ShawnVanBriesen
Curse of the Demon Commission
My last Commission of 2014. Task Force X: The Suicide Squad takes on the evil Dr. Julian Karswell and his runic symbol summoned demon.

After establishing his signature style with such moody classics as Cat People and I Walked with a Zombie, Jacques Tourneur returned to peak form with the first-rate supernatural thriller Curse of the Demon. It's a horror-noir set in England, adapted from the M.R. James story "Casting the Runes" and built around the ominous notion that black arts--particularly the use of ancient runic symbols--can summon a deadly beast from hell. Dana Andrews is the stubborn American skeptic, determined to debunk a genteel occultist (Niall MacGinnis) whose evil powers are ultimately incontestable. The briefly seen demon may be cheesy by latter-day standards, but its nightmarish appearance--and Tourneur's masterful use of subtle suggestion, threatening atmosphere, and eerie special effects--make Curse of the Demon one of the best horror films of the 1950s. The slightly longer British version Night of the Demon for film-buff comparison; it's essentially the same film with a few extended scenes. . --Jeff Shannon

Robert Mcginns Artist Study by ShawnVanBriesen
Robert Mcginns Artist Study
This is an exercise I do regularly. I redraw something by an artist I like as a way to see how they solve problems in their work. I generally have a few of these laying around the studio. It's a good way to get warmed up for inking.

This is a paperback cover by one of my favorite artists: Robert McGinnis www.americanartarchives.com/mc…

I did this 11 x 17 on Bristol board, I inked it with a Raphael Martre Kolinksy 8404 #2 brush.

This a new comic that I have a story in. It's done very much in the style of the Warren magazines horror line Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella.

Commercial artist, animator, actor, (occasionally...or rather, recently) art director or production designer on film and TV productions. Lately, I've started drawing comic books again (haven't done so since 1999).

Mostly living in Minnesota and damning the inability to surf here. Well, you can surf here...but... not well. Just ask 3/4 of my children....or anybody that has actually surfed in the ocean. Surfing sucks here...moving on, now.
